Creating Your Online Business Logo For FREE!!

Spread the love

By now I am sure you have read a few of my other posts (click here) about starting an online business and the benefits that come with it. Well this post is focused on creating your own business logo for FREE and without having to use any logo software or being a photo shop wizard.

Why Is It Important For My Online Business To Have A Logo?

Whether you have an online or ‘physical’ business it is essential you have a business or website logo. This puts your business / website a cut above those that do not bother with imagery or logos. If you were to visit a site an were unsure about purchasing a product, what is the first thing you look for? Does the site / business look legitimate / trustworthy? A logo shouts that you are a legitimate and successful business. Many people settle for whatever website host or platform they are using to provide a ‘header’ with just the text of your business. However this doesn’t make your website / business standout or ‘pop’.

SUCCESSFUL Business Logo’s – Keep It Simple

We see company logos everyday and to be honest probably never really study them as we are so familiar with them. There is my first point right there, we are so familiar with them because we recognise them for their simplicity. If I asked you to draw the McDonald’s logo or the Nike logo, nearly everyone would be able to do so, why? Easy, because they are simple to remember. Thats what you should always aim for when it comes to logo’s keep it simple. Sure, add colour and nice fonts but make it easy to read and understand.

McDonald's logoCheck out some of the logos to you right. McDonald’s, a simple but recogniseable ‘M’. It also has 2 colours Yellow and red. A lot of people try to over complicate their logo’s or the layout of their business website. Yes it can look flash but it can also be very confusing for people to understand what it is you do for a living and how your business can help them.

Nike LogoCheck out the Nike logo, arguably one of the biggest sporting brands in the world, again they have kept it simple. The famous Nike tick with the name of the company above.

I Cant Think Of A Design For My Logo…

As mentioned above, the key to a good captivating logo is to keep it simple. people normally fall at the first hurdle when it comes to designing a logo by overthinking the process. if you cannot think of a design or something that links well to your business / website then strip it back to basics. Simply, just write out your company name, do some doodles, get some ideas. For example McDonald’s begins with the letter ‘M’ so they’ve made a big M and coloured it yellow. Simple as that.

My Website Logo

As you can probably see at the top of my page and below, my logo is just writing with some ‘separation lines’ put in place to ‘jazz’ it up a little. You can use bright colours if it suits however the grey goes well with my site theme.

I have also emphasised the W F and Y just in case i want to add my logo to pictures and content I do not want others to copy.

See below a picture on my Instagram page for example

This is taken from my Instagram page. the shortening of W | F | Y makes it easier to add an image to pictures i do not want others to take.

How To Create Your Logo For FREE

Its a common misconception to think you need to pay someone to design a business / website logo for you. I did mine on a tool that most laptops and computers come with. That tool is Microsoft Word. If your laptop doesn’t have Word, it will have a similar programme called ‘word pad’ or something similar.

If you cannot find the Microsoft Word program on your laptop, simply click the menu button on the bottom left hand side of your computer screen and type ‘word’ in the search bar this will ten bring up any software linked to the word, word.

Creating Your Logo

I created my logo by just choosing a simple and readable font and playing around with colours without over complicating things. I always advise, if possible to make your logo on a white background as

a) websites are better with white background and black writing

b) but it also makes life easier if designing fliers or business cards as white is white and you do not have to contend with different background shades.

I recommend you make your logo relatively big if it is writing so it does not pixelate when implementing it onto your site or business documents. The size below is perfect

My logo, doesn’t really describe what my site is about with just the WFY, so I added ‘Affiliate marketing at its finest’ at the bottom to give the reader an idea of what my business is about. If they do not know what Affiliate marketing is most people will google it and find out quick enough. Or they may then visit your site to find out what it is… first bit of traffic done all thanks to a logo.

You can use clip art for images also when designing your logo or shapes from the auto shapes button in Word. Again keep it simple. See another website I owns, logo below. Simply done with the circle auto shape and filling it with a colour and adding the first two letters of the website name.

Once you have your logo designed and you are happy with it, click the print screen button on your keyboard (PrtSc) this will capture the screen image on your logo for you.

Head over to a programme on your laptop called ‘paint’ or ‘3d paint’. All laptops come with this program already installed. Simply search for ‘paint’ in the search bar of your computer.

Once open press ctrl v or right click and click paste. This will paste the screen shot onto your paint document.

Then at the top of the paint page you will see a ‘dotted square’ with select underneath it (See below the arrow I have put next to the ‘dotted square’.) Click that, and drag it around your logo.

bb crop

Once happy with the crop of your image, press Ctrl and ‘N’ on your keyboard this will open a new document.

Press Ctrl and ‘V’  on your keyboard, this will paste your cropped logo. Simply save as and you have your logo!

There you go its as simple as that, no expensive software or technicalities to worry about.

Great post! I recently made a new logo for my website and did spend money for it. It turned out great and I did incorporate the “keep it simple” model, but I love that you give a way to do it free here! Doing it via word, does it allow you to transfer to all sites and formats a logo can be used for? Thanks again for the info!

      Hi Vince
Thank you for your comment. There are some great logo designers out there, no doubt about that. As long as your image isnt to small it can be scaled for websits and social media using an app (also free) called instasize

This post has come at the perfect time because I’m now looking to design a logo.
Thi didn’t know you could do it on word. I do confess I’m not artistic in any way. Keeping it simple makes a lot of sense. I love the idea of trying to do this for free.

I remember spending what seemed hours messing about with various logo designs and even now I am not happy.

You are bang on with making your website stand out and look professional. That is something I always look out for. I need to get a good feel before I continue to read articles from that site.

I see quite a few sites that do go over the top and for me, that can also have an adverse effect.

Thanks for sharing I really enjoyed the post.

This is an excellent post. I need a new logo and have been looking for away to get it one inexpensively, but your post has shown me that I can make one myself and I am now going to give that route a try. Thank you. Cheers

Hey Russell – well you inspired me. I just went ahead and made a simple logo for my website – Bad Investment Advice – and ways to avoid it. I used Powerpoint rather than Word as it was a little easier to manipulate the words. All in Arial Black. I made a Black on White version and a White on Black version. I am using the white on black for the moment as that matched my theme. Thanks for a very simple and inspiring piece. Best regards Andy

  8. Hi Russ – your post on creating a logo is very easy to follow. It gives me the exact program and shows the options for creating a Logo. Good information to share. This is also good for the business just starting out, that doesn’t know if their site and product will be a success, therefore wanting to watch their budget. Good luck.

When I see people spending hundreds of dollars on programs and paying others to create a logo for them I think they are wasting a lot of money. All you need is a bit of creativity and imagination and this can be done by yourself in 5 minutes, for free. I know cause I created mine effortlessly and easily. Thanks again.

    Hey Russell,

Thank you for this post. I started my website very recently and I am also in the process of getting a new logo. Your idea of doing it on word is excellent. Sometime we think too much and make things complicated when the answer is right in front of us all the time.

I have been running a website for about six months.
As I put more effort into it, I thought that it would be a great idea to have a logo. I agree with you that the logo is an essential item even for the online business.

I surfed the web for the logo design. Several websites provided the design service of the logo. Of course, I was asked to pay for it, and I did not purchase any of them.

I haven’t thought of creating a logo with the program I already have (MS-Word and Paint). It will be worthwhile to try. Thank you for your advice.

    Hey Russell,

I really enjoyed reading your post. I could do with a better logo for my business as I just used a free website that uses generic logos.

I will take you up on using the techniques you are describing and I will let you know how I get on. I will even give a review on your techniques if they work for me.

Thank you for sharing another great article, and keep up the amazing work.

    All the best,
