If you are reading this article, you are more than likely dissatisfied with your current job. If what I have just said relates to you then rest assured you’re in the right place.

We all have or will go through times when we question whether it is time to quit our jobs. However, there are always some dissatisfied with your job?ifs and buts that make us think differently. What if I get another job I don’t enjoy? But I can’t find another job with the same or better salary. What if I am just overthinking? Well, believe me, I have been there when it comes to being unsure about my job and all of those questions and a hundred more have run through my mind.

Today’s post will focus on the big question that is when should I quit my job and when is a good time.

Why Are You Asking When Should I Quit My Job

Before you make the decision about quitting your job or not, firstly, you must understand why you are thinking this way. Is it because you dislike your job in general, is it because you have grown tired of the job and want a new challenge or is it another reason? Either way, you must fully understand the reason before making the decision to jump ship.

The reason for this is because it is very easy to just make a decision on a whim and then regret it. Again, I have been there. I wasn’t particularly enjoying my job due to me working in the same office as my boss and he was very particular in how he wanted things done. To be honest, I have no issue with that as it’s his company so what he says goes. However, it got to the stage where it felt like I could do nothing right. Anyone who works in the customer service industry, knows that once you have built a rapore with that customer then you know ways of dealing with them efficiently that benefits you and them. Anyway, this didn’t seem good enough. So I looked for an alternative.

unhappy

I found an alternative that was completely different to my job at the time. I then handed my notice in and served my months notice. Little did I know that the company I chose to go and work for got their start date wrong therefore I was out of work for several months. Luckily back then I lived with my parents so it wasn’t the end of the world.

My old boss heard I was in between jobs and said he had a member of staff off with sickness and asked if I would come back until my new company was ready for me. This worked well for both of us so I agreed. I actually took on a slightly different role which I enjoyed and excelled at. It was at that point that I realised that if I had spoken to my employer when I was unhappy all of this may have been avoided. I could have made a big mistake by jumping ship without weighing up my options properly.

I advise to sleep on it before making any rash decisions and also talking is very important seek advice from loved ones and also your boss if you can.

When Should I Quit My Job – What Do You Have Lined Up?

The most important thing is ensuring you have another job or source of income to rely on when you decide to take that leap of leaving your current job. There’s nothing worse than leaving a stressful job to then become even more stressed over not being able to pay your mortgage/rent and bills. Again as per above, i’ve been there.

The most important point you need to take from this is that whatever happens DO NOT leave your job without a back up income. If you are fortunate enough to have savings and you can rely on these then yes, maybe it would be OK to quit your job. However, in my opinion, it’s best to have at least a years’ salary saved up before you decide to quit without having another job to go to.

If you have a side income lined up like an online business or side hustle, I suggest that you ensure you have earned money from this already before just hoping you will earn during your training, When I started my online business I thought I would be earning within the first few days, unless you’re experienced in the field, it’s unlikely that you will earn money this quick. A lot of people are in the position of wanting to quit their job. However, they do not have any back up plans to keep them financially stable. Having a backup should be the goal. Once this is figured out, the process should be easier. Great post.

    Hi Russell,

    Great article!

Humans, by nature are more emotional. Sometimes we decide on things way before considering a lot of other factors.

As you mentioned, we must always have a pipeline of income coming in before deciding to quit our job – especially at times like this where the job market is bad.

I think it’s great that more people realise the opportunities of earning online! Enjoyed reading your article.

    Cheers.
    SAM
